A Cool Turn at Gnomestead Farms: Fall Prep and Steady Progress

Hey folks, it’s Joe from Gnomestead Farms, checking in from our little corner near Ellington, MO, on this cool September afternoon—1:58 PM EDT as I write. I’m enjoying the unseasonably cool weather; it’s a nice break from the hot, slow summer we’ve had. These shifts in weather always bring a fresh perspective—and a few sinus issues, I’ll admit with a smile 😊—so let’s talk about where we’re at and what’s ahead.

The summer heat and some challenges slowed us down a bit, but we’ve made steady progress on Josh’s gnome home. It’s been a gradual haul—no big leaps, just careful steps with the framing and a start on the plumbing—and we should be able to move him in soon, relatively speaking, which feels good 😊. Speaking of Josh, we had a scare recently when he hydroplaned in pouring rain, slid off the road, and hit a tree. He’s okay, thank goodness, but it’s been a reminder to take things one step at a time. On a bright note, Melissa has started a new job as a nursing instructor at Three Rivers College, and she’s really enjoying it—a big lift for our family as we plan our next moves.

With fall just around the corner, I’m looking forward to the cooler weather and the start of hunting season. There’s something about being out in the woods that settles the soul. The animals are doing well—chickens laying steadily, ducks and turkeys are happy, and bunnies are thriving. We’re thinking about fall prep, like building fences to keep things secure. Here’s what I’ve picked up from this season:

  • Take it steady: Slow progress on the gnome home and Josh’s incident remind me to focus on doing it right, not just fast.
  • Lean on family: Melissa’s new role is a win, and we’re pulling together after Josh’s crash to support each other.
  • Look ahead: Cooler days and hunting season bring new energy—maybe we’ll wrap up that gnome home soon.

When we started Gnomestead Farms with Melissa and the kids, it was about growing with the land, and these quiet times are part of that story.

What are you looking forward to this fall—hunting season, cooler air, or something else? Drop it in the comments; I’d love to hear. And if you’re in the mood for some farm flair, check out our gnome-themed mugs in the shop—every sale helps us keep moving.

Thanks for being part of this journey. What’s one thing you’re hoping to do as the season changes?
